Italian company taken to court over unpaid salaries

Italian company Bryvarc, an employer of a number of Gozitan workers, has been taken to court after a number of locals failed to receive their salaries.

L-orizzont reported that the same company, a manufacturer of security plastic cards, was expected to invest €4.4 million in Gozo’s industrial estate in Xewkija and employ 140 workers.

It quoted statements from finance minister Tonio Borg and Gozo minister Giovanna Debono, for praising the benefits of the employment and investment generated by the company in Gozo.

The company’s directors were taken to court on 27 May, when a number of employees were denied their pay for up to six months, between November 2009 to April 2010.

Bryvarc, located and based in Italy, was reported to the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) for the delay in paying their employees, after which some workers started to receive their salaries.

L-orizzont reported the company was no newcomer to the Gozitan courts, with a number of existing cases already opened against the company’s Italian director and a Maltese national involved in the company. The two were admitted to court after a number of reports reached the ETC’s director.

However, when the case was due to start, the Italian director could not be reached and the Maltese partner claimed he no longer worked for the company, postponing the case to September 2010.
