Updated at 17:34pm.

A 47 year-old policeman and his 45 year-old wife have been admitted to Mater Dei Hospitial, suffering from gunshot wounds following a shooting incident at a Rabat take-away and bar this afternoon. The woman is said to be in a critical condition.

Police sources told MaltaToday that an off-duty policeman and his wife, who works at the Point De Vue restaurant in Rabat, were involved in an argument when gunshots rang out.

While investigators are trying to establish how events unfolded and what sparked the argument between the two, forensic experts combed the area around the Saqqajja area in a bid to discover how many weapons were used.

Police believe that no other persons were involved in the shooting.

A Magisterial inquiry led by Magistrate Miriam Hayman is underway, while senior police officers were on site together with forensic experts.

@elwenzu Your comment is pathetic..........of course they don't. In fact one of the accusations will be that he carried a weapon (not service but private) without a license from the Commissioner of Police. Another will be that he commited a crime that he was duty bound to see that is not commited. And I could go on forever.....but with someone as pathetic as you it will be a waste of time.

So off duty police have a remit to carry weapons? That seems to be a most unsavoury state of affairs. Answers please.
