Drug mules jailed for 19 years, fined €45,000

Two foreign men were this evening handed heavy jail terms despite admitting charges related to importation of cocaine and heroin, with the intent of trafficking in Malta.

Judge Lawrence Quintano jailed Stephen Nana Owusu, 36 of Ghana for 11 years and fined €30,000 after he pleaded guilty to importing almost a kilogramme of heroin in capsules inside his stomach.

Owusu was arrested as he arrived on a flight from Brussels in July 2009.

Meanwhile, another foreigner, Touray Sana, 30 of Gambia was jailed for eight years and fined €15,000 for importing almost half a kilogramme of cocaine.

He was caught with the drug as he arrived in Malta from Girona, Spain on a Ryanair flight.
