One in twenty are non-Maltese nationals
Up to 4.8% of the total Maltese population is composed of non-Maltese nationals i.e. citizens of other countries.
The preliminary census report issued by the National Office of Statistics reveals that since 12112 in 2005 a year after Malta joined the European Union to 20086 in 2011 - an increase of 66%.
53% of non-Maltese residents are males and their average age is 39.5. A fourth are aged between 25 and 34.
The majority of non Maltese nationals (37.6%) reside in the most populous region; the Northern Harbour district which includes large towns like B'Kara, Sliema, St Julians and Qormi.
Non-Maltese nationals constitute 6.3% of this region's population.
But the highest proportion of non Maltese residents is found in the northern district which includes Mosta, St Paul's Bay and Mellieha. In this region non Maltese residents constitute 8% of the population.
Non-Maltese nationals constitute 4% of the Gozitan population and 5% of the south eastern region which includes B'Bugia, M'Xlokk, M'Skala and Zurrieq.
The lowest proportion of non Maltese nationals (2%) is found in the South Harbour districts which includes Valletta and Cottonera and in the Western region which includes Zebbug, Rabat, Attard and Siggiewi.
