Alfred Sant raises point of order over absence of Nationalist MP

Point of order raised as Beppe Fenech Adami fails to turn up in parliament.

Former Labour Prime Minister Alfred Sant raised a point of order just as Nationalist MP Charlo Bonnici was to take the floor and address the House on the European Stability Pact, this evening.

Sant argued that the Speaker should take note of the fact that Nationalist backbencher Beppe Fenech Adami was not present in the House even though he was still in possession of the time to address the House.

Fenech Adami was interrupted mid-way yesterday evening by Opposition whip Joe Mizzi who moved an adjournment motion which was later rejected by the Speaker of the House Michael Frendo.

Sant insisted that the government's side was constantly criticising the Opposition for failing to turn up in parliament. "If we want to things well it should be noted that, even though he was in possession, Fenech Adami didn't come," he said.

The Speaker accepted Sant's argument and registered the point of order. He then formally gave the floor to Charlo Bonnici who is talking about government's investment in education and the country's competitiveness.

The government's side will this evening remain in possession of the time. Tomorrow, when Finance Minister Tonio Fenech returns from Luxembourg, the House will continue discussing the ratification of the EU stability treaty.
