Greens want to be mediators on new Commissioner
Alternattiva Demokratika proposes itself as mediator in choice of new EU Commissioner for Malta.
Alternattiva Demokratika has called for the appointment of a 'consensus commissioner' in a bid to quell the political controversy in appointing a commissioner that could fuel tension at home as elections approach.
Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD Spokesperson on EU an International Affairs, said: "The Dalli affair could have political repercussions on Malta's credibility if PN and PL insist on appointing their own partisan commissioner. It is important that the Maltese commissioner to be named in a few days' time is a capable and consensus candidate that represents the interests of the whole country and is not a divisive figure. Serious countries appoint consensus commissioners who ensure continuity. The PN and PL simply cannot risk Malta's credibility for their partisan and egoistic needs. Gonzi and Muscat must meet quickly to agree on a new commissioner that will have Malta's interests at heart, and not parochial party interests."
Michael Briguglio AD chairperson said: "Alternattiva Demokratika - the Green Party offers to assist as mediator in proposals for EU commissioner."
