Ministry umbraged at MP’s refusal to discuss car parks with TM chief
Labour MP Joe Sammut told Transport Malta CEO that a debate in the House of Representatives was more appropriate.
The Transport Ministry hit out at the Labour Party for refusing to meet with the CEO of Transport Malta in order to discuss the privatisation of the car parks.
According to the ministry, this reflected "hypocrisy" on behalf of Labour.
"PL refused the opportunity to discuss or express its views on the restructuring of the system despite all the fuss it made because not enough consultation was carried out, insisting it didn't have time to say with what it doesn't agree," the ministry said on Labour.
The ministry published two letters in which TM CEO Stanley Portelli proposes to meet with Labour on 16 October and another letter by Labour MP Joe Sammut declining the meeting.
"Given that there's a motion to discuss the issue, we believe that this should be discussed in the House of Representatives where it would be more opportune for the Opposition to explain its position," Sammut wrote back.
The transport ministry said this reflected the Opposition's lack of substantial opposition to government's proposal. "Labour simply wanted to gain political points and seemed to believe that this could be done at our expense," the ministry added.
"Truth is that such politics of opportunism lack substance and the ones to suffer are the parkers who don't know what's going to happen now."
