Labour MP calls on Speaker to ‘protect’ Opposition
Labour MP Gino Cauchi says the government side was ‘disrespecting the Opposition’ and insists ‘we want answers to our questions’.
Labour MP Gino Cauchi this evening called on Speaker Michael Frendo to see that the "dignity of the Opposition is being respected".
Addressing the House following the parliamentary questioning time, Cauchi insisted that the Opposition's right to make question was not being respected.
"We enjoy the right of raising questions but on several occasions our questions remained unanswered or blatantly ignored," Cauchi said, adding that there were times were the answers wouldn't be given in "a dignified manner".
Cauchi went on to refer to a question he raised in parliament on 18 June 2012 when he asked for details about the Brazilian company that had relocated to Malta. Cauchi's question was addressed to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
The Prime Minister had however replied: "The answer will be given during another sitting."
The question remained unanswered.
"The Chair must protect us and the Prime Minister must give his answers," Cauchi insisted.
The company in question, whose name has not been revealed, decided to relocate its offices to Malta during the Libya crisis. The company coordinates major construction projects in North Africa.
