Gozitan MP Anton Refalo proposed a ban on fireworks following blast at factory in Gharb, Gozo.

The majority of MPs oppose the idea floated by Labour MP Anton Refalo to ban fireworks completely.

Refalo's proposal came days after last Sunday's firework factory explosion in Gharb, Gozo in which four men died.

This was the second deadly explosion in Gharb, when in 2010 six persons lost their lives in another firework factory explosion.

Speaking in Parliament, Refalo said that in the lack of adequate laws and enforcement the time has come to ban fireworks completly.

He said that Maltese politicians should shoulder some responsability in the fatalities caused by firework explosions and stresses that the situation was never controlled adequately because of electoral exigencies.

Mr. Anton Refalo is taking a very difficult decision with his stand, one which will probably lose him the backing of his, fellow mps and quite a few of his constituents....which is why he is most probably right. My compliments, sir, for putting people's welfare first and foremost.

Mr refalo has a right to his opinion as much as the next man! He speaks sense especially in view of the loss of life in firworks factory explosions especially in Gozo! Fireworks is a PASSION and all Maltese are passionate about it enjoying the shows ,the risks and supporting such shows which mose certainly give colour to our festas! Alas there is always the same talk on enforcment, pooicies and laws AFTER LIFES ARE LOST!
