Labour’s ‘careless’ promises mean more taxes, new PN billboard
Labour leader ingratiating himself to electorate with careless promises that will demand higher taxes, says PN.
A new billboard unveiled by the Nationalist Party today will drive the message that Labour leader Joseph Muscat's electoral promises are being done "carelessly" and will mean "more taxes".
The PN today said Muscat's alleged ambition to be Malta's youngest prime minister at 39 (the youngest was Nationalist prime minister Ugo Mifsud at 34) "and his thirst for power is making him promise everything to everyone, making promises carelessly, as long as he wins power."
Tourism and justice ministers Mario de Marco and Chris unveiled the billboard 'Muscat promises = new taxes' today, saying the electorate would pay for Muscat's promises with a reduced quality of life through higher taxes.
"Muscat is trying to be liked by everyone," Said said. "What's important to him is not consistency but whomever he addresses, because he wants everybody's vote. He wants to be liked by everyone by promising everything to everyone."
Said said Muscat wanted to reduce energy bills irrespective of the price of oil. "Muscat is not telling us when he will reduce our bills, how he will do this, or how he is going to compensate for this reduction. The price of oil will keep on rising and Muscat must raise taxes to fulfil this promise."
De Marco said Muscat was keeping his electorate in the dark over his plans to raise taxes to make up for the shortfall generated by increased government spending from new promises made by Labour.
"The same people Muscat has appointed as shadow ministers have a track record of having introduced a series of taxes to fund past promises, the most classic being the excise tax to replace VAT.
"Muscat will introduce new taxes again to finance his promises, affecting business and people's quality of life."
