The government should shoulder its responsibility and ensure that an independent audit on the Marsa incinerator is carried out immediately, Labour MP Leo Brincat said.

In a statement Brincat reiterated Labour's call for an urgent and independent audit of the Marsa incinerator, because "at the moment there is a total collapse in the operations of the incinerator."

He explained that the plant operations were stalled after being in operation for just four days after undergoing repairs, which were not in any way related with the scheduled maintenance works.

Brincat said: "This request is being made in the best interest of public hygiene and health, the health of the workers and the obligations Mepa and the Occupational Health & Safety authority have to ensure that the critical situation does not wosen."

The Opposition MP added that he augers the Labour Party's call is not ignored and all results are made public once the audit takes places.

On its part, the ministry for resources and rural affairs said that the incinerator was not working on Tuesday because a technical inspection was being carried out on a fault.

The ministry accused Brincat of being misinformed about the technology used by the incinerator and said the Labour MP "does not know how the plant works."
