195 deaths caused by traffic accidents in 12 years

18 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents last year and a total of 3076 accidents were reported, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in reply to a Parliamentary question tabled by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis.
The Opposition MP asked for a detailed breakdown of traffic accidents reported since 2000 and the number of deaths recorded in the accidents.
In his reply, the Prime Minister, who is also responsible for Home Affairs, noted that since 2004, accidents which did not involve fatalities, injuries or damage to public property were no longer investigated by the Police.
The highest number of accidents recorded was in 2002, with 14,294 accidents reported. However, the highest number of accidents recorded following the 2004 change in the reporting of accidents, was in 2007, with a total of 5008 accidents recorded.
Between 2000 and 2011, a total of 195 deaths were recorded in traffic accidents with the highest number of casualties being reached in 2009, when 21 deaths were recorded.
