Sharp increase in MaltaPost's postal tariffs

MaltaPost attributes sharp increase in its tariffs to the inter-operator fees on international mail.

The domestic letter mail has registered systematic losses, says MaltaPost.
The domestic letter mail has registered systematic losses, says MaltaPost.

MaltaPost has revised its postal tariffs upwards, insisting that throughout 2012 it was negatively impacted by changes in the framework.

According to the service provider, the changes were set by the Universal Postal Union who established inter-operator fees over international mail.

"Moreover, for a number of years, various services such as the domestic letter mail and mail registration, have recorded systematic losses," MaltaPost said.

"This makes it unsustainable for MaltaPost to keep providing the current level of service. Against this backdrop and MaltaPost's commitment to keep providing an efficient, high-quality service MaltaPost submitted to the MCA a request for a number of tariff increases."

In a decision published on 8 November, the Malta Communications Authority approved the new tariffs requested by MaltaPost.

"The revised tariffs shall still remain among the lowest in Europe," MaltaPost added.

The new rates - accessible here - will come into effect as from next Monday.

This should be a massive encouragement to send eCards for Xmas. It's much greener in terms of carbon footprint, and totally free. What is it that's stopping you? Social pressure? This is the way of the future - don't put your money in other people's pocket - you need it.

Dear Dom Chircop, This is the usual stock answer when making comparisons by the company's concerned and is the same for water and gas prices to name but a few .It is never the amount one earns for example that is the issue but the purchasing power of the money left in their pockets after all taxes and they never make comparions on this essential like-for-like basis for that very reason as then this would shoot down in flames their obtuse claims

The assertion that Malta's postal rates are amongst the lowest in Europe is a damned lie. To compare the price of a stamp in Malta and compare it to the price of an equivalent stamp in any other country is not comparing like with like. Indeed, under the purchasing power parity regime, Malta may be the costliest, and not the lowest. I will briefly explain the purchasing power parity, and take a packet of 20 cigarettes instead of a stamp. The purchasing power parity compares prices according to the level of wages. It asks: how may minutes must a U.K. national work in order to buy the fags; and how many minutes must a Maltese work to buy that same pack of fags ? This immediately shows that cigarettes in Malta cost more than the U.K. Likewise the postage stamp. So any wise guy who us us the mantra of lower Malta prides should shut up!!!

Higher costs? Simply drives away more business to e-mail and Paypal.

How come these exaggerated tariffs and cost increases are coming into effect now. Are they afraid that a new MCA Board would ask for your efficiency instead of full cost recovery plus+PLUS? Someone must be looking after the interests of Lombard bank shareholders rather than those of the consumer.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL from Maltapost.Let us be clear for this is not a "sharp" increase but a massive and unjustifiable 28% one!It is a wonder that Maltapost never cited the troubles in the Middle East as grounds for this increase to match the artifically manipulated increases in oil and gas by the greedy rate-riggers of such prices.Send your local Xmas l cards before Monday is my suggestion to screw them up
