Labour reiterates call for independent audit of Marsa incinerator

MP states 650 tonnes of waste waiting to be incinerated, delayed by the repeated switching off of the plant.

Labour MP Leo Brincat has once again urged for an independent audit of the Marsa incinerator. The call comes after the plant was switched off once again yesterday afternoon and hasn't yet been switched back on.

According to Brincat, the problem came from a piece of cement that fell off just a month after it had been placed along the refractory lining.

"It is understood that orders from above are insisting that the plant is switched on anyway," Brincat said, adding that statements from Wasteserv and the Resources Ministry that the plant was undergoing normal maintenance did not hold.

"Is it normal that in less that a month damage occurs to the same area that was made brand new?" he said.

He added that the continuous switching off and on has accumulated some 650 tonnes of waste which are meant to be incinerated.

The MP also called on government to public an expert report to see whether government has taken on board the recommendations or whether it has ignored completely.
