Government and Opposition expressed their solidarity with government MP Franco Debono, after the latter revealed in parliament that he had received a death threat. The condemnation came after Labour MP Anglu Farrugia said the opposition was showing solidarity with Debono, and urged the government side to follow suit.

Meanwhile, Speaker Michael Frendo confirmed that he had written two separate letters to Police Commissioner John Rizzo, urging him to take action over the alleged death threat.

"I have informed the Police Commissioner about the contents of the letter and I have also informed him over Debono's request for personal protection," Frendo informed the House this evening.

Frendo added that in his second letter he urged the Police Commissioner to take the necessary steps needed to protect the MP.

On his part, Justice Minister Chris Said thanked Frendo for the action taken and added that the government side condemned "all types of threats, especially if this is done against a member this House".

Minutes before the finance minister commenced his budget speech last Wednesday, the MP revealed that he received a death threat and an empty shotgun cartridge with a note saying "If the government goes down, everybody will go down."

He demanded a police investigation over this anonymous letter and tabled the evidence in Parliament.
