This latest departure brings the total of beneficiaries of international protection who were resettled to the United States from Malta since 2007 to 1,098 migrants. Since the start of the USRRP in 2008, the number of beneficiaries of protection resettled to the United States amounts to 1,070.

287 migrants have been resettled from Malta to the United States of America since the beginning of 2012. More beneficiaries of international protection are expected to leave to the United States in the coming weeks.

Now here is an idea. Each time the USA takes a number of illegal immigrants away from Malta, the EU should make every other EU State take over the same amount. So far the USA a non EU state, has taken more of these illegal immigrants than all of the EU States put together. How about that for sharing obligations?

The latest Frontex report says (page 6): “Malta is now targeted on purpose… The reason for this change has not yet been confirmed; however, in the past Malta resettled some Somali migrants in the United States and in some EU Member States, which might be acting as a pull factor.” http://www.frontex.europa.eu/assets/Publications/Risk_Analysis/FRAN_Q2_2012_.pdf
