Resources ministry accuses Labour of obstructing waste management
Resources minister George Pullicino fails to reply to calls for his resignation, attacks Labour's credibility in waste management.
The resources ministry has reiterated that Labour leader Joseph Muscat and MP Leo Brincat are wrong and trying to fool people by claiming that WasteServ did anything wrong in signing a €30 million contract for services provided at the agency's sites although the initial deal was worth just over €1 million.
The ministry insisted that the contract value increased to €30 million because it included wages, bonuses and allowances which were not taken into account in the initial stages. The ministry also noted that the contract extension was approved by the Contracts Department and this was explained to the Auditor General.
Once again, the resources ministry failed to directly reply to calls for minister George Pullicino and the WasteServ management resignation. However, it accused Labour leader Joseph Muscat of trying to block the modernisation of the Sant' Antnin treatment plant following his involvement in a petition which urged the EU to cease the funding programme.
"If the Opposition had had its way, the Maghtab landfill would have never been closed down and the uncontrolled and un-engineered landfill would still be in use to the detriment for human health."
The fact that waste management has been a success hurts the Labour Party, the ministry pointed out, adding that for this reason Muscat and his colleagues attempt to discredit the government's achievements despite the Opposition's obstruction.
