The Libyan community in Malta today held a protest outside the Libyan embassy in Balzan and at City Gate in Valletta over the way violent militias are governing and terrorising the country.

The protestors are also demanding the removal of people with strong ties to the Gadaffi regime from the Libyan government.

A spokesperson for the Libyan community told MaltaToday that the country was being run by the military militias based in Misurata and other parts of the country.

He added that the community was demanding changes in the Libyan embassy in Malta. "The only thing that changed since the war is the flag on the embassy."

Libyan ex-pats have organised protests all over Europe, with a number of demonstrations taking place in the UK, Germany, Italy and other countries.

The spokesperson also said that protests were held in Tripoli and Benghazi despite the presence of armed militias who abduct and torture pro-democracy activists.

The Libyan community in Malta insisted that if militias and Gaddafi loyalists are not removed, the war would have been in vain and people would have shed their blood for nothing.

The community presented a letter to the Charge d'Affairs in Malta Mohammed M A Elghirani to pass on to the Libyan government.
