Muscat said this during a visit to the Millennium Chapel in Paceville, where he was received by the chapel's founder Fr Hilary Tagliaferro and director Fr Saviour Grima.

The Labour leader explained that poverty in Malta has increased to 21% meaning that up to 88,000 persons are at risk of poverty.

Muscat who was accompanied by Labour MP Carmelo Abela  added that poverty comes in various forms "and unfortunately material poverty is on the rise again."

Muscat thanked the chapel's staff for their work in the community and said that a new government will give the chapel all the necessary support.

The chapel's management explained that it is currently providing help to around 250 families. The Millennium Chapel provides counseling, food aid and training in life skills and parental skills.
