Give civil society a greater role - President Abela
In his annual New Year's greetings President George Abela urges political parties to give more space to civil society.
President George Abela urged all political parties to include a chapter on civil society in their forthcoming election manifestos.
Speaking at the annual New Year's greetings, President Abela stressed the need to create "space for civil society to work in", hinting at a constitutional reform in regards to the participation of civil society in the running of the country.
During the customary greetings, Abela was paid visits by the country's authorities including Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat, Speaker Michael Frendo and Chief Justice Silvio Camilleri.
One of the main points of discussion was the forthcoming election and the recent events which tarnished the judiciary.
Describing the President and his wife as a symbol of unity, Chief Justice Camilleri pointed out that unfortunately the same cannot be said of the judiciary.
On his part, President George Abela underlined his trust in the judiciary pointing out that it was an essential pillar in democracy. He also urged the press to handle the judiciary with care and ensure that the institution's credibility is not eroded further.
Speaking on the forthcoming election, both Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat augured a serene and calm electoral campaign.
