Fuel prices fall, but not reflecting eurozone reductions – Labour
Charles Mangion says EC’s energy oil bullettin reductions not reflected in Malta prices.
Opposition spokesperson for finance Charles Mangion is claiming fuel prices that recently saw a reduction of 3c in petrol, still do not reflect internationla prices.
Mangion said the Energy Oil Bullettin issued by the European Commission shows the price of petrol inside the Eurozone had to fall by 7%, when in Malta the same price fell by 4.5% between September 2012 and January 2013.
Mangion also said the price of diesel was predicted to fall by 4% between September and December 2012, when the price in Malta fell by 1.5% between September and January.
"This shows that in Malta the price for fuels is not reflecting the reductions in the rest of Europe, much to the detriment of Maltese consumers paying these higher prices.
"This matter is a long-drawn out issue whcih has not yet even been addressed by Enemalta and the Malta Resources Authority... if one eliminates the taxes paid to the government over petrol and diesel, the December 2012 price is still 16% higher for petrol than the eurozone average, while diesel is 4% higher."
