Paola mayor calls on Transport Malta to repair traffic lights
The Paola local council urges Transport Malta to repair a number of traffic lights which do not function despite being installed months ago.
The Paola Local Council has asked the authorities to take the necessary actions regarding the new traffic lights in Valletta Road and Palm Street Paola which are currently not functioning.
During a press conference held on Thursday, Paola Mayor, Roderick Spiteri said that when the Arriva service was introduced, Paola became a bus interchange and a new zebra crossing was made in Valletta Road.
He added that after a lot of pressure exerted by the Paola Local Council in September, Transport Malta installed a set of pelican lights on this zebra crossing, however Spiteri noted that the lights were still not operating despite being installed four months ago.
Spiteri insisted that the Paola Local Council complained with Transport Malta about this situation and the authority informed the Local Council that it was still waiting to be given the power supply in order to connect the pelican lights.
"This situation is both unfair and poses a serious danger both for the Paola residents as well as other people who visit this locality for commercial purposes," Spiteri said.
In addition, Spiteri noted that these were not the only pelican lights in Paola that were not functioning. "Last April, a new zebra crossing was made in Palm Street and although Transport Malta installed the traffic lights poles, till today, these traffic lights are still inexistent," he said.
He pointed out that residents should be made aware that these pelican lights don't fall under the council's responsibility, "but it is Transport Malta which should assume full responsibility."
