Protesting postal workers promised Gozo-based employment
Gozitan postal workers threatening not to vote because of lack of Gozo-based work promised alternate Gozo-based employment.
A disused Gozitan factory could be considered as an alternative for the employment of Gozitan residents who have complained to the Nationalist Party of withholding their vote unless they ar provided with Gozo-based employment.
It's a common thread in Maltese politics: the hurt voters who demand their MPs to work hard for their votes. According to one worker who spoke to newspaper Illum on condition of anonymity, the group of Gozitan postal workers were in a meeting with a governmnet minister some days ago, to deliver their complaints.
The Gozitan workers are currently excused from their jobs in Malta, where they now work, but took the opportunity to meet with the minister to say their families would not vote vote in the coming election unless they are provided with Gozo-based employment, a bone of contention on the sister island.
A lot of back-office employment previously taking place inside Maltese government offices has been transferred to Gozo, apart from other customer care services from the private sector - including Maltapost, the operator of the Maltese postal service.
Sources said the Lloyds factory in Xewkija, once a pillar of Gozitan manufacturing for the export of shows, was being considered as an alternate source of employment for Gozitans.
