Government urged to intervene as arrested Maltese in Dubai claims police brutality
Friends and family of an arrested Maltese national in Dubai have urged government to intervene in his favour, as claims of police brutality are emerging from the emirate.
Sandro Lucia, 36 from Swieqi was arrested on May 24 after police found a substantial amount of alcohol in his car.
According to friends and family, Sandro Lucia did have an alcohol license. However, the police insisted on a search in Sandro Lucia’s residence where more alcohol bottles were found.
Sandro Lucia is claiming that he was manhandled by the police and also robbed of 6,000 AED in cash from a drawer.
Family and friends who have managed to visit Sandro Lucia inside Port Rahid prison in Bur Dubai, have claimed that he has what seems to be blood around his wrists and a suspected broken thumb.
While the Maltese Consular office in Dubai is currently handling Sandro Lucia’s case and also conducting regular visits to prison, lawyer Giannella Caruana Curran has taken up his legal representation from Malta.
Sandro Lucia remains in prison pending formal prosecution and probable transfer to Al-Awir central jail station.
