AD: 'PN and PL should stop acting like Father Christmas'
AD calls for electoral gimmick halt, promotes itself at 'voice of reason.'
"In parliament, AD will be the progressive voice of reason, steering away from electoral gimmicks. It is simply unacceptable that both Nationalist and Labour Parties have gone in Father Christmas mode during this electoral campaign, promising everything to everyone and also make irresponsible tax cut proposals," Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said.
AD is proposing progressive tax measures where those who can afford to contribute the most, do so. The polluters pays principle is another important part of the AD's principles.
"Such a tax system ensures that necessary funds are available for universal public services and a sustainable welfare state. This is the model used by countries with the strongest social model, such as Nordic countries," Briguglio said.
AD's education spokesperson Mario Mallia criticised the way that a serious discussion on education has been shunted aside by the tablet giveaway.
"Whilst the continuation of the country's IT strategy in education is important, this provision has to be discussed within the context of the general needs of all students including the financing of early intervention programmes, psychosocial services among other urgent needs. The same applies for the proposal for the Gozo tunnel with a proposed cost of hundreds of millions of euros as a distraction from the immediate concerns of Gozitans," Mallia said.
He reiterated that "It is also unfortunate that the EU is also being used as a pretext for a substantial amount funding for such projects when such funding is far from guaranteed. The use of such funding should be undertaken with a clear strategy in mind rather than to finance the irresponsible promises of the political class in an election campaign".
"If the 2015 target of a balanced budget pledged by the prime minister is to be taken seriously, the political class needs to behave in a responsible manner and refrain from making promises it cannot keep"
