Austin Gatt makes statement to Police Commissioner

Transport minister Austin Gatt was seen entering the Police headquarters in Floriana on Tuesday morning and after a one-hour meeting said that he had given a statement to the Police Commissioner in connection with inquiries into corruption in Enemalta's oil procurement. An earlier report on inewsmalta.com said that Gatt was seen at the Police headquarters accompanied by Assistant Commissioner Michael Cassar and inspector Angelo Gafa.

On exiting the Police HQ, Gatt told the press that he had given a statement to the Police Commissioner John Rizzo but would not be divulging the details of its contents not to interfere with the investigations.

"The Police Commissioner asked me to give a statement over the commissions. At this stage I am not allowed to divulge the statement before the Police Commissioner gives me his permission to do so," Gatt said.

In reaction to Labour's calls for the minister to be questioned by the Police last week, Gatt had claimed that he had absolutely no problem should the police call for him and said he would collaborate fully and without any qualification with any investigations being carried out.

On Sunday evening, businessman George Farrugia was interrogated at the Police headquarters in Floriana on Sunday evening in connection with his involvement in the oil procurement scandal uncovered by MaltaToday.

On Sunday, a MaltaToday investigation revealed email correspondence, bank transfers and online chats which showed how businessman George Farrugia played a pivotal role in Enemalta's oil procurement decisions, while oil commodities companies Total and Trafigura worked closely with Enemalta's top officials, the former MOBC chief Frank Sammut and Farrugia himself.
