Malta is committed to strengthen its special relationship with the Libyan people, Foreign Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said.

In a meeting held with his Libyan counterpart, Mohammed Emhemed Abdel Aziz, in Tripoli yesterday, Zammit Dimech said that the relationship would be strengthened by collaborating in various sectors, including education, politics, security and justice.

The meeting was held on the eve of a meeting in Paris held on the second anniversary from the start of the Libyan revolution, which brought down Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

"Malta and Libya will continue working together to promote each other's interests," Zammit Dimech said, highlighting the need to strengthen border controls.

He said this would be discussed in detail by foreign ministers attending the Paris meeting.

Zammit Dimech also pointed out that Malta is committed to remain by Libya's side in its quest to strengthen its democratic structures.

On his part, Abdel Aziz thanked Zammit Dimech for his visit and expressed his gratitude for Malta's contribution in aid of the Libyan people.

"The two countries' relations are not simply diplomatic and political, but it is a special relationship based on solidarity," Abdel Aziz said.
