Italian police investigate landing of 11 migrants from Malta
Italian police are investigating the possibility that eleven African migrants that landed during the night on the beaches of Marina di Modica in Sicily, were illegally transported by powerboat from Malta.
The news was broken as Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was meeting Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in Rome, with an agenda dominated by issues related to illegal immigration.
Malta and Italy have had a good share of spats over the acceptance of illegal migrants, including incidents related to the illegal transport of migrants by power boats from Malta to Sicily.
A number of extraditions were requested by the Italian authorities over the years, while the Maltese police were kept active every summer to round-up high powered boats that were suspected of being used to transport migrants.
Last night's landings in Sicily have once again re-opened the issues between Malta and Italy, and deportations under the Dublin II agreement may soon be enacted by the Italian authorities.
