UPDATE: Young mother helpless in head on collision

Rosanne Azzopardi, killed in a car accident early yesterday morning, which miraculously saw her 13 month old daughter escape unscathed, was unable to protect herself from the fatal impact.

The accident took place a few metres away from the Gharghur bypass. Azzopardi, 26 who lived in Bugibba, was driving to her mother who lives in Hamrun to drop off her daughter before heading off to work in San Gwann.

Azzopardi, who was driving a Toyota starlet, collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero driven by 18 year old Matthew Barbara from Gwardamangia, accompanied by passenger Shaun Ridley, also 18 from San Gwann.

Barbara lost control of the Pajero, which toppled over and skidded at high speed on the other side of the road. Azzopardi was helpless as the Pajero charged powerfully towards her, leaving evident tyre marks at the front of the Toyota.

L- Orizzont reported how upon impact, Azzopardi’s car turned 180 degrees in the opposite direction, and the door of the driver’s side pushed open leaving her body hanging out of the car. The Pajero hit a pavement and landed back on its tyres in the opposite direction.

A medical team was called on sight and certified Rosanne Azzopardi dead. Her daughter, although she appeared to be suffering no injuries, was taken to hospital and checked as a precautionary measure. Police were also called on site, led by inspector Elton Taliana, Sergeant Alan Buhagiar, Constables Joe Scicluna and Jean Paul Vella and mobile and traffic police inspector Mario Tonna.

This is the tenth fatal road accident recorded this year; the same number recorded throughout all of 2006.
