MEPA halts work at Polidano’s site in Hal Farrug
MEPA representatives to meet Polidano Group and discuss other pending planning applications.
Development works which were being carried out without planning permission at a site in the area of Hal Farrug, adjacent to PoliGas Ltd, have been stopped the Malta Environment and Planning Authority said today.
The news comes just hours after Prime Minister Joseph Muscat declared that no illegal development will be tolerated and enforcement by MEPA on illegal structures will be carried out.
The PM was referring to news reports that construction firm Polidano Bros had resumed an illegal development at the Hal Farrug headquarters six months after police were asked to take action over environmental abuse.
In a statement, the authority said that its enforcement officers noticed that works resumed on a site which a few months ago had been sealed off with concrete blocks. These blocks had been removed after the developer requested permission from the authority to remove some of the plant machinery from on the site.
MEPA warned the developer that should any illegal works resume on site, the place will once again be sealed off with concrete blocks, resulting in disruptions to the operation of his other permitted development.
"In the coming days, the Authority will be meeting with representatives of Polidano Group to address this case and discuss other pending planning applications," a spokesman for MEPA said.
In September 2012, following several warnings, the authority requested the Police to initiate criminal action against the developer for abusively carrying out a series of developments within the Hal Farrug area without the necessary planning permits.
