Family doctors welcome appointment of health minister

College, association of family doctors call for implementation of primary healthcare reforms.

The appointment of Zebbug doctor and first-time MP Godfrey Farrugia as health minister - now also with his own office at Mater Dei Hospital - has been welcomed by the Malta College of Family Doctors and the Association of Private Family Doctors.

"We not withh satisfaction that a family doctor has been appointed as minister of health. APFD strives to improve the standard of medical care offered by family doctors and we believe primary health care offers great opportunities to further improve the wellbeing of our citizens," the AFPD said.

On its part, the MFCD, which is responsible for the continued professional development of family doctors, reiterated the APFD's belief that family medicine offerred great opportunities to improve further the standards of the country's health system.

Both College and association noted that the Labour government plans to bring forward reforms in the nationwide primary healthcare service.

Good start Dr. Farrugia. You have started doing the work of what Dr. Cassar had to do in all these years. Common sense is common, of course reforms in the Primary haelth care system had to be made quite a long time ago..... and when this is made there will be less patients unnecessarily being referred to the Causalty department at Mater Dei..
