Former PN backbencher Franco Debono has been appointed Commissioner for the revision of laws, a role that will see him responsible of the consolidation and fine-tuning of laws.
In a statement issued this evening, government formally announced the appointment of Debono as Commissioner of Law.
His office has been established according to the 1980 Act on the Revision of Statutory Laws. According to the government, Debono's role will be vast but will ensure better and more correct legislation.
The law also provides the Commissioner to carry out other specific duties granted to him by the government. To this aim, Debono was given the role to be responsible of coordinating the Constitutional Convention.
Debono's first job will be to prepare the terms of reference for the Constitutional Convention.
When contacted by MaltaToday earlier this afternoon, Debono had refused to comment, simply saying he will not confirm or deny the post.
During his time as member of parliament, Debono repeatedly called for a justice reform that included the revision of laws which were today outdated or obsolete. Debono also headed the parliamentary select committee for the recodification and consolidation of laws.
