PN takes government to task over President’s speech from the throne
Nationalist Party says President’s written speech was ‘highly partisan’, a repetition of the slogans carried by Labour during the electoral campaign.
The Nationalist Party have dubbed the President's written speech as "highly partisan" which was repetitive of the slogans carried by the PL and Prime Minister Joseph Muscat during the electoral campaign.
Today's speech delivered by President George Abela in parliament did bear the hallmarks of Labour's campaign, including the reference to "an arrogant leadership", the dominance of the "clique" and "failed" plans.
As is the norm, the President's speech is penned by Castille and outlines the government's vision for the coming five years.
But according to the PN, the "highly partisan" speech was not fit for the occasion. "With the speech being read out by the President, it should have focused on unity and not on partisan slogans which undermine such an important occasion for parliament and which undermine the Presidency itself," the PN said.
The PN added that "one expected" a less partisan slogan which went against "the Prime Minister's slogans" of unity. The PN also lamented that the nomination of Anglu Farrugia as Speaker had been carried out without the opposition being consulted.
"This doesn't bode well for the future and it is yet another proof that the 'hand of friendship' which Labour wants to hold out is nothing else than an act to tease and humiliate the Opposition, especially since the government enjoys a nine-seat majority."
