730 persons living in dangerous accommodation – Minister
Housing Authority must ensure suitable works are carried out in government accommodations, ensuring that taxpayers get value for money.
730 persons were living in dangerous accommodation and have been awaiting alternative accommodation for years, some even dating back to four year.
Visiting an elderly woman who lived in an apartment managed by the Housing Authority, Social Policy Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca said the authority must ensure that contractors respect their obligations and providing services that returned value for money paid by the taxpayer.
The apartment the minister visited today was given to an 89-year-old woman in September but had a leaking gas pipe, a broken bathroom sink and a window which did not close properly.
A similar situation existed in a block of apartments in Merchant's Street which had problems with the water tanks and sewage system.
Preca said some 3,000 others were waiting for social accommodation.
