A police investigation has been launched into allegations that Animal Welfare Department officers were administering lethal injections to stray animals, without the supervision of a veterinary officer.

The allegations were forwarded from the parliamentary secretary for animal rights, Roderick Galdes, to the Commissioner of Police.

The allegations are believed to refer to cases dating back to 2010.

MaltaToday is informed that animal welfare officers were witnessed administering the lethal injection to stray dogs that they were supposed to collect from near Marsa's deep water quay.

Other allegations concern the unauthorized killing or dispersal of strays by animal welfare officers.

Police investigators have already questioned animal welfare officers.
