Labour turns its back on Fgura Mayor
The Labour party has turned its back on Fgura Mayor Darren Marmara, as fellow Labour leaders have embarked on a vote of no confidence against him, to elect a new mayor.
Marmara is now the focus of a report lodged by Fgura’s executive secretary of the department of local government. The report concerns roadworks of €80,000, which were awarded to Asfaltar Ltd, without a call for tenders being issued.
Now a motion of no confidence in the mayor has been presented by former Labour mayors Anthony Degiovanni and Salvu Camilleri, Rita Cutajar, and Labour committee president Pierre Dalli.
Byron Camilleri is being nominated for mayor.
The concillors said in their motion they were unable to retain a serene relationship with the mayor and that it was necessary to force his resignation.
In a statement issued to the media, Marmara has declared himself to be “untainted by any form of corruption or other immoral acts” and that “nothing at law can nullify my function as mayor.”
He also contends the councillors’ vote of no confidence does not have Labour backing, and instead says he has been flooded by a wave of “continuous support through messages, phone-calls, correspondence and petitions.”
