Updated: Ministry orders preliminary inquiry on fatal boating incident

Transport Minister Austin Gatt has ordered a preliminary inquiry on the fatal boating incident last Monday in which an elderly man died while he was at sea.

Gatt has appointed lawyer George Said to make an inquiry on the incident that involved the MV Sorcery and “make his recommendations according to Article 314 of the Merchant Shipping Act”.

Earlier today, the Police announced that the autopsy of the 81-year-old man who was killed in a boating incident last Monday, had shown the man died asphyxiated by a large amount of water, and not with a heart attack as first reported by the Armed Forces.

The man was killed when his boat was apparently rammed by a 70 foot sailing yacht off Tigné point. The elderly man reportedly jumped into the sea, where he was later picked up by an AFM rescue craft and taken to hospital where he died later.
