Discrimination against EU nationals in Malta must stop – AD
Alternattiva Demokratika says EU citizens must be treated like Maltese residents when it comes to the payment of Water and electricity bills.
Alternattiva Demokratika has come out in defence of EU citizens residing in Malta who are paying higher tariffs than local residents.
"We ask entities such as Go plc, the Water Services Corporation and Enemalta if the deposits paid by non-Maltese EU citizens to these companies prior to 2004 have been refunded following Malta's accession to the EU," AD spokesman Arnold Cassola said.
He explained that non-Maltese EU citizens, unlike Maltese nationals, had to pay deposits against telephone land line subscriptions and water and electricity services prior to Malta's accession to the EU.
"Now that Malta has joined the EU, these EU citizens should be treated like Maltese nationals and therefore have their deposits refunded. They should also be treated like Maltese residents when it comes to the payment of Water and electricity bills," Cassola said.
All residents are to be treated in the same way, as Maltese citizens are treated in other EU countries, he added.
