No board of directors at Malta Enterprise

Former finance minister Tonio Fenech lashes out at the government’s inertia in the economic sector, asks why Malta Enterprise board has yet to be appointed.

Nationalist MP Tonio Fenech hit out at the government's sluggishness in appointing a new board at Malta Enterprise.

Speaking in Parliament, the former finance minister explained that to date Malta Enterprise has no board of directors because the Labour government had not appointed a new board to manage the national development agency responsible for promoting and facilitating international investment.

Fenech said that despite accepting the resignation of the former board, the government decided against keeping the outgoing board in place before appointing a new one.

"Who is taking the decisions at Malta Enterprise? Who took the decision to close down the Malta Enterprise office in India which is one of the emerging economies. Has the government already given up on attracting investment after one month in office?"

Malta Enterprise is led by a Chairman and a Board of Directors appointed by the minister for the economy, investment and small business, Chris Cardona.

Fenech pointed out that the government has no economic policy, stressing that the Labour government needs to create new jobs.

Quoting Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the former finance minister said that Labour must stop acting as an Opposition and start behaving like a government.

Tonio Fenech has a very short memory. Some few months ago, before the general elections, a decision was taken to bring back the officer in charge of investment promotion in the USA. Some years ago, under the Nationalist administration, decisions were taken to close down the Malta Enterprise investment promotion offices in London and Milan.

Tonio Fenech is right in outlining one thing. There are still a good number of boards which have not been appointed. Whats holding the PM and his ministers back. It is the responsiblty of the politicians to keep the wheel in motion but how can this be achieved if the former board members are in limbo. Do they carry on as 'business as usual' or is there no one to give direction to the many entities leaving them to drift.
