President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami has this morning been transferred from the critical coronary care unit to another ward at Mater Dei Hospital where he will be kept under observation.

Fenech Adami was admitted to hospital yesterday morning.

PN media reported that Fenech Adami had suffered from a heart attack and that he was admitted for surgery.

In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon the government said that Fenech Adami was admitted to Mater Dei this morning with chest discomfort. He was admitted under the care of the Cardiology Team and underwent a coronary angiogram.

A decision for medical treatment was taken. He is now recovering in the critical coronary care unit where his condition is reported as being stable.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Michelle Muscat wished Fenech Adami a speedy recovery and said that the former PN leader had "given a lot to the country."

"At this moment our thoughts rest with Dr Fenech Adami and his family," the statement read.

In the past, Fenech Adami, 79, had had chest problems and had to have a heart bypass performed as well as a pacemaker installed.

The former Prime Minister was at first reported to be suffering from chest pains.

Fenech Adami is being treated at the Emergency Department where he is expected to be kept for observation.

The former PN leader served as Prime Minister from 1987 until 1996 and again from 1998 until 2004.  He was then appointed as President in 2004.
