Chamber of Architects voices concerns on heights relaxation policy
Chamber of Architects and Civil Engineers calls on government to revise heights relaxation policy for hotels.
The Chamber of Architects and Civil Engineers (KTP) expressed its concern over the Heights Relaxation policy for hotels recently announced by the Parliamentary Secretary Michael Farrugia and Minister Karmenu Vella.
"Although KTP are not in possession of the updated policy as approved by MEPA, it made its position clear with the previous administration in a comprehensive report outlying issues in the justification and in the proper administration of this policy and amongst its recommendations advocated proper impact analysis of the build environment in the applicability of this policy towards achieving a more sustainable environment and a Better Quality of life in the long term."
The Chamber reiterated its availability to discuss with government its concerns and possible refinements to the policy which will be ratified by the Prime Minister as required by current legislation.
Earlier this week, Parliamentary secretary Michael Farrugia announced that hotels in tourist zones will be eligible to apply to build an extra two floors.
The policy was announced back in October 2012. The hotels that can benefit from this new policy must be in Mellieha, St Pauls Bay, Bugibba, Qawra, St Julian's, Paceville, Sliema, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuga. Hotels in Gozo will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The new policy limited to within development zones which are outside Urban Conservation Areas or Residential Priority Areas.
