GWU welcomes relocation of Monti hawkers to Ordinance Street
Monti hawkers unanimously approve agreement to relocate to Ordinance Street.
The General Workers Union welcomed the agreement reached between government and the monti hawkers to relocate to Ordinance Street.
Some 70 hawkers will benefit from this agreement.
The GWU said it could not understand the criticism that the Valletta market will mar the cultural aspect of Valletta's entrance. It said the stalls will be organised esthetically in "absolute uniformity and professionalism in standards and space".
The union added that one had to accept the fact that the market was the sole source of income for many hawkers. "They cannot live in uncertainty and instability, being transferred from one side to the other based on the government's mood. Today's government gave heed to the hawkers' plea," the union said.
