Curia confirms cancellation of Zejtun feast

Curia confirms cancellation of Zejtun feast following talks with local organisations.

The Archbishop's Curia has today confirmed that the Zejtun feast will not take place following the death of Parish priest Eric Overend.

The Curia's decision to cancel the feast of Zejtun was contested by a number of organisations including Banda Beland, Banda Żejtun, l-Għaqda tan-Nar and l-Għaqda tal-Armar.

The local groups had asked the Archbishop to reconsider his decision to cancel the feast and he had accepted.

Parish administrator Fr Gino Cauchi had floated the idea to hold a feast with reduced activities, however following the organisations' insistence for a full blown feast, the Church decided to cancel all celebrations.

It is a pity that the Curia is shooting itself in the foot yet another time. It is the Church that will ultimately loose out with lesser and lesser attendances in Church.

THE BIG QUESTION IS are village feasts religious, or is religion and Patron Saints JUST AN EXCUSE to party, enjoy fire-work displays, get-togethers, enjoy band marches , show off and just have fun?

A toned down version of band marches should come into force in all feasts. The custom of carrying half naked young people shoulder high should stop , especially if they are drunk , no matter how many petitions are held.
