Muscat non-committal on pre-electoral agreements
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat non-committal on pre-electoral agreements on MEPA permits.
Answering a question on whether any agreements had been struck with developers prior to the 9 March election, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that the only commitment he had taken was that of reducing bureaucracy.
Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi asked the Prime Minister in Parliament to provide a list of development applications he had discussed with developers and the pledges he made between 2008 and 2013, during which Muscat was leader of the Opposition.
Azzopardi also asked the Prime Minister to list which Malta Environment and Planning Authority permits he promised to developers during the same period.
Muscat answered: "The Honourable MP can put his mind to rest that my commitment is that excessive bureaucracy is removed in every case, and that was the only promise I made."
In the run-up to the 9 March general election, former Labour deputy leader and current Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia denounced his party's intimacy with building developers and other businessmen, marking them out as the people who "wield power in the country".
"Contractors are too close to Labour like some are close to the PN," Farrugia said in his candid interview. "I know they are close with certain people involved in the Labour Party's finances."
