GWU vows to defeat precarious jobs
GWU names and shames Sa Maison Home for the Elderly for employing workers in precarious conditions.
Workers at the Sa Maison Home for the Elderly are employing persons in "indecent" conditions, the General Workers Union (GWU) said.
Describing the working conditions as precarious, the union said it was committed to name and shame companies and employers who are employing workers in precarious conditions.
Among the problems at the Sa Maison Home for the Elderly in Pieta, GWU said that the workers are not being paid for their overtime according to law and their sick leave is being withheld.
The workers are also being asked to pay for the tailoring of their uniforms and are only being allowed to take leave in exceptional cases, the union said. Moreover, the workers are employed without contract, it said.
"This is not an isolated case and the union will go ahead and name and shame other companies employing persons in precarious condition. This is part of the GWU campaign which will not end before precariousness is defeated."
It added that it would be investigating these cases and when precariousness is confirmed it would take the necessary action and inform the director of the department of Industrial and Employment Relations.
