Petard falls close to fisherman in Valletta

An elderly man was admitted to hospital this morning suffering from fright and serious problems to his hearing after a large petard fell close to him while fishing and exploded.

Police said that the 71 year-old man was fishing on the rocks below Fort St. Elmo when a petard launched to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel didn't explode in the air and landed close to where he was.

The explosion rocked the area and many car alarms went off. People who happened to be close by called for assistance as the man appeared to be in distress.

An ambulance was called to the scene and took the elderly man to hospital where he was kept for observation.
