Parliamentary secretary for justice Owen Bonnici attended a formal meeting of the Council of the European Union discussing Justice.

Issues included a proposal relating to new methods of recovery of civil debt from private individuals between Member States as well as the Fundamental Charter of Human Rights of the European Union.

Bonnici also held talks with Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding during which he explained the work being carried out by the Maltese Government to reform the Justice.

Particular reference was made to the appointment of the Commission for the Holistic Reform of the Justice System and the 135 recommendations published for public consultation.

The government described the talks as being "very positive", with the Commission noting that it will be following the work very closely, in order for the reform to be carried out urgently, effectively and in a timely manner.

Great , perhaps finally we can pull ourselves, the law courts and the archaic judiciary into the 21st century. The Eu justice scoreboard report makes for depressing reading although I must say it seems to have motivated the members of the reform committee, a whopping 135 recommendations! Here's hoping a proper cultural overhaul is effected and the EU is watching.
