Tourism minister laments neglect in Gozo and Bugibba

The previous government performed admirably in the tourism sector, however a number of shortcomings led to the loss of competitiveness in 3-star hotels and lower-end operators, minister Karmenu Vella said.

In an interview with Sunday newspaper Illum, the tourism minister said that while the previous government achieved well in the sector, the profitability of tourist operators was dented by the 'stratospheric' energy tariffs.

Vella added that certain areas such as Bugibba and Gozo fell behind when compared to other touristic areas.

"A sense of abandonment was felt in lower category hotels which were left to their own devices and as a result they lost their competitive edge. Furthermore, the growth in the sector was not distributed equally and areas such as Bugibba and Gozo were not given their due importance," Vella said.

@stenbht so two wrongs makes a right ! You are very wrong. Age has nothing to do with it. Just google the tourist fora especially those of UK and see how wrong you are. Entertainment noise is assocciated with Qawra and Bugibba, again NOISE not music !

Serracin, the answer is : for the young locals and tourists YES. For the older generation Maltese, NO. Go to similar tourist hot spots in Greece, Spain, Italy, etc. Its much of the same. Those kind of tourists look forward to dance the night away, every night, without spending a fortune on drinks, like in some clubs. Maybe some want a quieter setting. Well you walk further up from this spot and it is quieter to sip a drink and admire the view.

Now that summer is in, Bugibba is turned into an open air street party with all sorts of noise. Is this what the tourists want ? Bugibba square is turned into a disco Sundays afternoon and daily after 2100 !

So now it is Gozo and Bugibba that are being neglected by the Tourism Industry? What about other cities and islands, namely Comino? What about other faraway places up North Minister Karmenu Vella? It is very clear that Gozo alone is getting more than it's share of advertising since this Administration took over. The new Cirkewwa Terminal and that of Mgarr Gozo (both built by the previous administration)should immensely improve on the Gozo Tourism, barring the new two lane road from Marfa to the Top of the Hill. I do believe that a new pier to accommodate cruise ships is also in the works.
