Malta risked losing €200 million in EU funds

Junior minister Ian Borg says upon taking office in March he discovered that Malta was at the risk of losing up to €200 million in EU funds.

Among the problems inherited by the Labour government, junior minister for EU funds, Ian Borg, faced the possibility of losing €200 million in EU funds.

Speaking to Sunday newspaper Illum, Borg explained: "There was a huge difference between the picture painted by the previous administration and reality."

He added that upon taking office he discovered that 50 projects were well behind schedule and Malta faced the possibility of losing €200 million in EU funds up to the end of the year.

The Employment and Training Corporation's sluggishness in issuing payments was among the reasons why Malta faced this risk, Borg said.

"Some beneficiaries have been waiting for their payment related to training programmes for more than three years," Borg added.

The person in charge of the ETC should have the balls in making its employees do the job. If an employer is to send commencement / Terminations of an employment they should make the employer do it and not pestering and threaten the employee who is in no way responsible for the actions of his employer.

to Ian Borg The problem of losing funds from EU comes from the situation of not having the non-destructive opposition. Refering to the previous goverment, there was to much spanners in the wheels coming from bothe sides of the destructive opposition and the internal situation of the previous government of that time use to have during the legislation. So nobody has the right to finger out his hand to some institution. The problem is ours. That opposition The people and especially those three created many problems to the previus government.

If what you claim has any truth, why haven't any heads been held accountable? What are you waiting for. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so take the lead, slice up before if goes mouldy and turn fingers at the previous govt.

Well done Ian.

This is a big lie because it is not true that Malta stood to lose anything. Mr Borg you have done nothing positive so far except critising the previous government.

Ian Borg now that you have pinpointed some of the problems, you may have also pinpointed the persons responsible for all the shortcomings. Are you going to make these people responsible for their inefficiencies and incompetence? A sum of € 200 million coming in Malta’s coffers will surly help to reduce my tax bill.

Come on tell us another. You have been harping on the same chord since March and we have not heard any news of any substance from you. Always the same old story for the past three months now.
