Minister says police union imminent

Home affairs minister Manuel Mallia says talks to set up police union are underway.

The government is in talks with the Police Association to guarantee right to unionise to all discisplined corps, home affairs minister Manuel Mallia said.

During a meeting with the General Workers Union, Mallia said the government is committed to implement its electoral pledge which will allow members of the police, army and the civil protection department to unionise.

"Talks to immediately offer the right to unionise to all disciplined corps are currently underway with the Police Association. At the moment work is being carried out on the legal framework."

GWU boss Tony Zarb expressed his appreciation to the government's stand against precarious jobs and urged the minister to make sure the policy is undertaken in regard to all workers falling under his ministry's responsibilities.

On his part, Mallia assured that precariousness would not be tolerated and he had already ensured that workers carrying out work in his ministry were not employed in precarious conditions.

What a big surprise. The PL is in power and the police are going to get their union representation, which in itself is a good thing. And which is the Union that will be representing the police, army and the civil protection department? According to GWU Boss Tony Zarb, it will be the GWU, so he expressed his appreciation for the PL government's stand against precarious jobs. How protective of you Mr Zarb. One might ask how much will the dues be when joining the GWU? Will the police and the army be able to strike at will? Time will tell.
